WEC Lines, a medium-sized container shipping line and subsidiary of the MSC Group, recently earned recognition for its commitment and progress towards its sustainability goals.
This achievement honours WEC Lines and its sustainable ambitions measured against alignment with international sustainability standards, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, the ISO 26000 standard and International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions.
In 2024, WEC Lines received an EcoVadis gold medal for its outstanding sustainability performance. EcoVadis is a leading global provider of business sustainability ratings and its gold medal reflects strong validation against international standards.
The EcoVadis ratings analyze a company’s sustainability performance and provide actionable steps for continued improvement. The company evaluates businesses across 21 sustainability indicators that address four core areas:
EcoVadis awards medals to the top 35% of the companies it evaluates. An EcoVadis medal or badge doesn’t mean a company’s sustainability efforts are flawless. Rather, the award signals positive intent and recognizes a company’s progress in sustainable practices, while acknowledging its ongoing potential for improvement and greater impact.
An EcoVadis medal is a great achievement that benchmarks a company’s sustainability performance against thousands of businesses globally. The gold award ranks WEC Lines in the top 5% of companies assessed by EcoVadis. Commenting on the achievement, Elisa Dellebeke, the Sustainability Officer of WEC Lines, said:
“This gold medal is not only recognition of what we have achieved together, but also a step forward in our sustainability ambitions. It shows that we don’t just talk about sustainability but really apply it in our daily work.”Sustainability at WEC Lines is grounded in three core areas: its operations, people and future-proofing its business.
On operations, WEC Lines builds sustainability into every shipment by optimizing routes for efficiency and prioritizing sea, rail and barge transport. The company is also upgrading its vessels with fuel-saving, future-ready technologies to protect people and the planet.
With its people, WEC Lines drives impact by empowering all its teams to work with dedication. The company believes that true sustainability comes from within, and so it fosters a culture where everyone contributes to guiding the process, not just the result.
With a focus on the future, WEC Lines views evolving EU and IMO regulations as opportunities to strengthen its business. The company will remain resilient and in control by using data to prepare early and align on long-term objectives that build trust.
WEC Lines’ emphasis on sustainability aligns with the MSC Group’s overarching commitment to building a sustainable future, collaborating across and beyond our sector to address global challenges.
