MSC Foundation Opens Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay

Coral reefs are the ocean’s most biodiverse ecosystems, spanning over 100 territories and countries. Though they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they serve as habitat for at least 25% of all marine species. Unfortunately, these reefs are among the Earth’s most vulnerable ecosystems when it comes to harm stemming from humankind. Damage to coral reefs has profound impacts on both the biodiversity of our oceans and the lives of millions of people worldwide.

As a result – and combined with the MSC Group’s passion for the sea, the MSC Foundation actively restores coral reefs through its Super Coral Programme at Ocean Cay in the Bahamas.

A Hub for Education, Research and Coral Restoration

Officially opened on 10 April 2025, the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay is a commitment to coral conservation and marine research. The grand opening was attended by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas and other local dignitaries, as well as MSC Foundation executive team members, board members, partners and world-renowned marine biologists.

This landmark, state-of-the-art facility, which was four years in construction, includes a fully equipped Bio Lab, a 50-seat lecture space for educational programmes, as well as a coral nursery, The Aquaria, which houses over 20 coral tanks to support coral restoration.

The center will offer a variety of immersive activities such as hands-on coral restoration, guided tours and interactive exhibits. Daniela Picco, Executive Director of the MSC Foundation, had this to say:
“This facility will connect marine scientists, educators, and the public, annually supporting up to 30 marine science students from four universities. By strengthening partnerships with Bahamian and international experts, engaging the wider community, and creating a bridge to hundreds of thousands of island visitors, we have laid the foundations for lasting ocean stewardship and meaningful conservation efforts.”

Super Coral Programme

The MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Programme was originally launched in 2019 to support the restoration of coral reefs within the nearly 65-square-mile area surrounding Ocean Cay.

Coral reefs are threatened by harmful fishing practices, pollution, sedimentation, and climate change, which causes widespread coral bleaching and death. In response, together with the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University, the MSC Foundation has focused on supporting the growth of “Super Coral,” which better survives environmental stressors like rising ocean temperatures.

In the six years since its inception, the programme has resulted in 298 small pieces of coral growing successfully in its coral nursery, with 100% survival after the fourth global heat event.

A Commitment to Education and Environmental Conservation

The launch of the Marine Conservation Center represents a pivotal step in the MSC Foundation’s longstanding effort to protect the ocean. It turns the Foundation’s vision into action – advancing science, restoring coral reefs and creating training opportunities for students worldwide.
